Christine Smit Died Saturday
Miss Christine Smit, 86, died Saturday morning, March 18 at 3:30 o'clock in the Story Custodial Home at Grundy Center. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the Bethany Presbyterian Church with Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf officiating. Interment was in the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Mrs. Roger Stachour was vocalist and Mrs. T. J. Heronimus presided at the organ. Casketbearers were Bernard A. Engelkes, C. A. Janssen, Virgil Abels, C. Wilbur Engelkes, John Janssen and Carl Rhoads.
She was born May 17, 1885 in Richland County, North Dakota, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Smit. The Smit family moved to Grundy county when Christine was about four years old and they resided on a farm northwest of Holland. They moved from the farm to Grundy Center in March of 1922. Following the death of her parents she and her sister, Nettie Smit, lived together until 1 1/2 years ago when she moved to the home of her sister, Mrs. Henry Henricks. She stayed there until six months ago and then moved into the Storey Custodial Home where her sister Nettie also resides.
Miss Smit is survived by two sisters, Nettie Smit and Mrs. Henry (Hannah) Henricks of Grundy Center, one brother, Henry J. Smit of Dike, and many nephews and nieces.
Preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters and one infant sister.
The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
