Gertie Penning, Age 92, Died
Mrs. Gertie Penning passed away Friday evening, January 13, 1978, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center following a lingering illness, having been confined to the hospital since December 15th of last year. She reached the age of 92 years, 7 months and 27 days.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, January 16, 1978, at 1:30 p.m. at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church at Holland. Officiating clergyman was Rev. Jerry VanCurler. Two selections were sung by the Kruger Sisters. Mrs. Lillian Dieken was organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. Benjamin Groote and Mrs. Bernerd Harms. Pall bearers were Vernon Beenken, David Oltman, Harm A. Rust, Wilbur Rust, Sam Rust and John M. Rust. Interment was in the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church cemetery. Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She was born on a farm in Shiloh Township, southeast of Wellsburg on May 16, 1885, the daughter of Harm and Swantje (Paterni) Rust, and attended the rural school in the area. On March 27, 1907, she was united in marriage to Harm Penning. The couple began farming a half-mile south of Holland, Iowa. After four years they moved to a farm in Palermo Township and after twelve years returned to their previous home south of Holland. After seven more years of farming, the couple retired in 1930 to their present home in Wellsburg.
Mr. and Mrs. Penning enjoyed the celebration of their Golden Wedding anniversary on March 27, 1957.
Mrs. Penning made confession of faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, thereby becoming a communicant member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church on April 13, 1919.
Preceding her in death were: her parents, her husband, who passed away on May 5, 1962, 1 sister, Mrs. Hattie Naber, 3 brothers, Aise, Henry and Harm Rust.
Survivors include: her daughter, (Dena), Mrs. Milf Meyer of Grundy Center; one granddaughter, (Leona), Mrs. Harold Everts of Grundy Center; 4 great-grandchildren, (Betty), Mrs. David Oltman of Grundy Center; (Nancy), Mrs. Vernon Beenken of Grundy Center; Mark Everts, stationed with the U.S. Navy in Okinawa; Judy Everts of Grundy Center; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Jeremy Oltman and Nathan Beenken and many other relatives and friends.
