Rites Held For Esther Engelkes

Funeral services for Esther F. Engelkes were held at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, Grundy Center, on March 6, 1987, at 11 a.m. Rev. Calvin W. Vanderwerf officiated.

A musical interlude of "How Great Thou Art" was rendered by Mrs. T. J. Heronimus, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude. The congregation sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus."

The casket bearers were Harm Itzen, Merle D. Meyer, Wilbur Smit, LaVern Van Hauen, Willard VanderHolt and Siebe Frey.

The ushers were Edward Flater and Irwin Rabenberg. Mrs. Albert Flater and Mrs. John Niehaus were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Colfax Center Cemetery, rural Holland, IA.

Esther was born on November 10, 1919, on a farm near Fern, IA. She passed away at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at the Dumont Care Center in Dumont, IA. She attained the age of 67 years, three months and 23 days.

She was the daughter of Will and Lena Smit Engelkes. When she was a baby, her family moved to a farm Southwest of Holland, where they lived until March of 1955, when after the death of her father, they made their home in Grundy Center. In 1967, she went to Dumont to make her home. She was a resident of Beverly Manor in Grundy Center from 1980 to 1981. On January 31, 1982, she returned to the Dumont Care Center and became a resident there.

She was affiliated and a friend of the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center.

Esther is survived by her mother, Mrs. Lena Engelkes of Dumont; three sisters, Arlene Engelkes of Dumont, Mrs. Douglas (Alma) Smith of Sunnyvale, CA, Mrs. Raymond (Mae) Hinders of Holland, and by several nieces and nephews.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
