Sophia Nortmeyer Thoren was born in Westphalia, Germany, on December 6, 1857, and came to America when 15 years old. She lived in New York City for two years and then came to Grundy county. She was married to Ben Thoren here and from this union nine children were born. They are Dick Thoren, Mrs. Susie Tjaden, Ben Thoren, Jr., Heiko Thoren of Buffalo Center, Mary Thoren of Elbow Lake, Minn., Stena Thoren, Fritz Thoren, Mrs. Herman Hayenga and Lena Thoren. All survive to mourn her loss, together with a sister.
