John J. Schafer Dies In Hospital Of Heart Attack

John J. Schafer, 66, lifelong resident of Wellsburg, died at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday of a heart attack in Schoitz Memorial hospital, Waterloo.

Schafer had stayed the past four weeks in the Woodlawn Convalescent Home, Waterloo. Earlier in the day Thursday he had been moved to Schoitz Memorial Hospital for x-rays and treatment, and passed away suddenly following the heart attack.

He had suffered from cancer, which earlier had been reported the cause of death.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Doyen Funeral Home and later in the Wellsburg Reformed Church, with Rev. George C. Poppen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bernard H. Stahl, Herman E. Ruter, Albert T. Kruse, Edward H. Harms, Johannes Heinrich and William Schmidt.

Music was furnished by the ladies' quartet of the church, composed of Mrs. Irwin Abels, Mrs. Raymond Beving, Mrs. John Olthoff and Mrs. Herman Stahl. Miss Marcella Neessen was accompanist.

Flower attendants were Mrs. John Heinrich and Mrs. Davida Meyer.

Obituary
John J. Schafer was born June 6, 1893, in Wellsburg, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Schafer, and died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 23, having reached the age of 66 years, one month and 17 days.

He lived his entire life in the Wellsburg area, where he worked for many years as a farm laborer. Until his recent illness he was employed as custodian of the Wellsburg Amvet Hall.

Survivors include two sisters, Jennie of Wellsburg and Tena, Mrs. Carl Madson, of Hubbard; two brothers, Henry of Grundy Center and Arend at home in Wellsburg.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one sister, Ida, Mrs. Reiner Aalfs, and another sister in infancy. His parents passed away in 1929.
