Herman H. Hippen, 95, of Wellsburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley.

Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Pastor Bruce Baillie officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.

Herman was born on June 1, 1905, rural Wellsburg, the son of Frank and Isbrandena (Kurtzleben) Hippen. He attended rural Wellsburg Country School. On September 7, 1933, Herman was united in marriage to Harriet Hutzell in Rockford, IL. Herman and Harriet celebrated 67 years of marriage as of last September. Harriet is surviving.

Herman was a very hard worker who owned and operated Hippen Tire and Battery in Wellsburg for 73 years. Herman had served as a past mayor and a past city councilman for numerous years in Wellsburg. He enjoyed visiting with the public. Herman also enjoyed his grandchildren.

Herman is survived by his wife, Harriet Hippen of Wellsburg; two daughters, Annabelle Penning of Wellsburg and Beverly (LaVern) Van Hauen of Cedar Falls; son, Herman (Jolene) Hippen Jr. of Wellsburg; brother, John Hippen of Aplington; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Herman is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Joyce Potgeter; son, Frank Hippen; grandson, Terry Penning; and 12 brothers and sisters.
