Irene R. Meyer, 72, of rural Holland, died March 4, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo of cancer. Funeral services were March 8 at Wellsburg Reformed Church. Burial followed at the church cemetery. A memorial fund has been established.
Irene R. Meyer was born November 2, 1931, in Cottonwood County, MN, the daughter of Arnold Adelbert and Laura Alvina (Jass) Freitag. She attended rural country school in Minnesota. Irene worked as a cook for 14 years in the grade school in Ormsby, MN, and also worked for the Townhouse Restaurant in Ormsby. On March 15, 1974, Irene was united in marriage to Marlyn Meyer in Brookings, SD. Following the wedding, Irene moved to rural Holland. Irene worked alongside Marlyn for many years being involved in all aspects of their family business, MD Meyer Seed Farm. Irene was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church. She was an excellent cook and she loved to garden. Family was very important to Irene and she was a mom and grandma to many others that extended beyond her immediate family.
She is survived by her husband, Marlyn Meyer of rural Holland; one son, Daryl Walters of Holland, three step-daughters, Marva Stephenson and her husband Mike of Marion, Sue Owens of Danbuy, TX, and Shelly Doyle of Bentonville, AK; one step-son, Myles Meyer and his wife Julie of Wellsburg; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Virgil Freitag of Butterfield, MN, Vernon Freitag and his wife Sharon of Round Lake, MN; two sisters, Joyce Halverson and her husband Ron of Alpha, MN and Shirley Berdan and her husband Leon of Lafayette, MN; and one sister-in-law, Bernice Freitag.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lois Meyer; one brother, Leroy Freitag; and one step-son-in-law, Darrell Owens.
