Henry Akkerman Died Wednesday At Hospital

Henry Akkerman, a long time resident of this locality, died at the Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown last Thursday morning following a heart attack. He had been taken to the hospital but a short time before. He was 82 years old.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the home of his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Martha Akkerman, and later at the Eastfriesland church in German township. The services were conducted by the local pastor, Rev. C. F. Siemsen. Burial was by the side of the wife in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Mr. Akkerman's wife died about 22 years ago. Since that time he lived alone on his farm 3 miles north and a mile west of Wellsburg. His only son, Henry Jr., died during the flu epidemic in 1918. Only survivors are his daughter-in-law and his grandson, Henry and one great-grandson.

Obituary
Henry J. Akkerman, son of John Akkerman, was born July 17, 1861, in Ogle county, Illinois. In his early years, he came to Iowa and made his home in German township, Grundy county.

He was united in marriage with Brechtjedine Janssen on March 20, 1888. In the year 1889 he became a member of the Eastfriesland Presbyterian church and remained a member of this church until the time of his death.

Casket bearers were Carl Giesking, Menno VanLoh, John Beving, Jerry Molendorp, Conrad Molendorp and John W. Lindaman.

Out of the county relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Westendorf, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Westendorf of Aplington; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Westendorf, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Westendorf, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Westendorf, Mr. and Mrs. John Endelman of Allison; Mrs. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. John Akkerman, Mr. and Mrs. John Oelman, John Meester, all of Parkersburg; Mr. and Mrs. Rikus Riekena of Ackley; Mr. and Mrs. Corneal Harken of Austinville.
