Mrs. T. Akkerman Died at Home Sunday Morning

Mrs. Tom Akkerman, who had been a resident of Grundy county 77 years, died at her home in Wellsburg at nine o'clock Sunday morning. Old age and cancer were the cause of her death. She had been bedfast most of the past years. She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Akkerman was born at Freeport, Ill. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Schultz. The Schultz family were among the early pioneers of Grundy county. After coming here they located on a farm in Pleasant Valley township where the family of eight children grew up. Mrs. Akkerman's maiden name was Ella Schultz. She and Thomas Akkerman were married 61 years ago. They moved on a farm a mile north of Wellsburg after their marriage where they lived continually until they came to Wellsburg 30 years ago. Mr. Akkerman died eight years ago on the 17th of last January. Since that time Mrs. Akkerman and daughter Tillie lived alone in their home. Of the eight children from the William Schultz family only one is now living. She is Mrs. J. B. Huisman of Wellsburg.

Surviving members of her family are four daughters and one son. The son Tom, who resides at Mason City, is suffering from a severe attack of arthritis and it was not possible for him to leave his home. The daughters are Mrs. Dick Claassen, Tillie Akkerman, Mrs. Ben Hockstra and Mrs. Otta Tjaden, all of Wellsburg.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon and later at the Reformed church. The services were conducted by Rev. Wm. Landsiedel. Burial was by the side of the husband in the cemetery adjoining the church.
