Colonel Glen L. Schmidt Buried Here Thursday

Col. Glen L. Schmidt passed away Monday afternoon, January 10, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, TX. He reached the age of 80 years, 4 months and 25 days.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 13 at 1:00 p.m. at the Doyen Funeral Home in Wellsburg.

Officiating at the services was Rev. Paul J. Grace of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Grundy Center.

Flower attendants were Mrs. George H. Geerdes and Mrs. Clarence Geerdes.

Pallbearers were Henry D. Geerdes, George H. Geerdes, Clarence Geerdes, David Geerdes, Harm Aukes and Elmer Fritzel.

The interment service was held at the Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Wellsburg Amvets Post No. 91 and the Wellsburg American Legion Ashing-Jaspers Post No. 213.

Mr. Schmidt was born Glen Lawrence Schmidt, son of Hattie and Henry Schmidt of Oxford, IA.

He entered the Old Army Horse Calvary in 1922 and served with the early Armored Units, infantry in India during World War II, Intelligence Corps in Austria where he coordinated the Post War Prisoner Exchange as Chief-of-Staff of the Counter Intelligence Corps in Fort Holabird, MD.

He entered the service as a Private and worked his way up to the ranks of a full Colonel.

On October 21, 1937, he was united in marriage to Hilda Geerdes.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Hilda; brothers James and Frances and sister Edith.

Those left to mourn his passing are two sons, Lawrence G. Schmidt and his wife, Kaye Karyl of Plano, TX; Glen C. Schmidt of Bettendorf, IA; 2 grandchildren, Robert L. Schmidt and Lauren K. Schmidt.

Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
