Rites Wednesday At Wellsburg For Mrs. John Schalk

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. this Wednesday at the Doyen Funeral Home in Wellsburg for Mrs. John E. Schalk, 63, who died at 6:07 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke's Hospital in Davenport following an illness of 2 1/2 weeks.

Rev. Arthur Kirk officiated at the service.

Casket bearers were Wallace Wood, Daniel Kinfer, James Spencer, James Picht, Bob McCue and Donald Diehn.

Mrs. James Willms was soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Wilbur Knock. Mrs. Ralph Johnson and Mrs. William W. Peters were flower attendants.

She was born Dorothy Tjaden in Wellsburg on April 5, 1906, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Meint H. Tjaden (nee Reka Frerichs). She was united in marriage to John Edgar Schalk on August 8, 1937 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

She attended Ellsworth College at Iowa Falls and Cornell College at Mt. Vernon. She taught school in the Wellsburg, Stout, Bristow and Hampton areas, and for many years taught school in the Davenport school system.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Davenport and was a member of the Silver Cross Circle of the King's Daughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Genevieve who passed away in 1935.

Those left to mourn her passing are her husband, one son, Stephen of Davenport; two brothers, Russell B. Tjaden of Sarasota, Florida; Mayo H. Tjaden of Wellsburg; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Davenport after which the remains were taken to Wellsburg. Further services were Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Doyen Funeral Home with burial taking place in the Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg.
