Mrs. Alice Riekena Dies Saturday
Mrs. Alice Riekena passed away at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Park View Manor Nursing Home in Reinbeck due to complications of advanced age. She had been confined to the nursing home since December 1st of 1967. She reached the age of 87 years and 9 days.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Second Reformed Church in Wellsburg with Rev. J. H. Elenbaas officiating. Burial was in the Shiloh cemetery.
Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She was born on a farm in Shiloh township, Grundy county, southwest of Wellsburg, on Oct. 15, 1883, the daughter of Jacob and Bessie (Meyer) Geerdes. She attended the rural school in the area.
On March 23, 1904, she was united in marriage to Trieno Riekena in Wellsburg. Following their marriage they lived on a farm in Shiloh township, southeast of Wellsburg. This union was blessed with 4 sons and 1 daughter. Mr. Riekena passed away in 1952.
Mrs. Riekena moved to Wellsburg in the fall of 1952 where she continued to make her home until moving to the nursing home in Reinbeck.
She was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church, having made confession of her faith in Jesus Christ on January 6, 1926.
Those who preceded her were: her parents, her husband, 1 son, Raymond, who passed away in 1942, 2 brothers; Albert and George Geerdes.
She leaves to mourn her passing: 1 daughter, Mrs. Emma DeNeui of Wellsburg; 3 sons, Jake Riekena of Reinbeck, John T. Riekena of Wellsburg, Willard Riekena of Iowa Falls; 1 sister, Mrs. Gertie Neessen of Tipton; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
