Former Wellsburg Resident Dies At Long Beach, Calif.

Mrs. Gertrude Neessen passed away at the hospital in Long Beach, California around 1:15 a.m. Monday morning, April 1, due to cancer. She had been taken to the hospital on March 23rd for treatment. She reached the age of 79 years, 3 months and 6 days.

She was born on December 25, 1888, on a farm in Shiloh township southwest of Wellsburg, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Weibe A. Meyer (nee Greitje Geerdes). She attended the rural school in the area.

Following her marriage to Ben Neessen the couple made their home in Wellsburg. Mr. Neessen passed away July 19, 1954. This union was blessed with one daughter.

She was a charter member of the Second Christian Reformed Church. She was a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.

In 1962 she moved to Omaha, Nebraska to make her home with her grandson, James Zwyers. In 1963 she moved to Long Beach, California to make her home with her grandson, Bernard Zwyers.

Those who preceded her were: her parents, her husband and 4 brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Clara, Mrs. Darris Schierbaum of O'Fallon, Missouri: also two grandsons: Bernard Zwyers of Long Beach, California and James Zwyers, stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Frankfurt, Germany and one sister, Mrs. Ella Nichols of Wellsburg.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church. Rev. John Elenbaas will be officiating clergyman. Burial will be made in Shiloh Cemetery.

The casket will be taken from the Doyen Funeral Home at noon to the church and may be viewed there until time of services.
