Peter A. Meyer Dies After A Long Illness

Peter A. Meyer from Wellsburg died at five o'clock Wednesday morning at the Woodlawn Convalescent Home in Waterloo where he had been a patient for two weeks. Death followed a failing health condition for the past two years. He would have been 80 years old had he lived until Apr. 7th. He resided in Grundy county all of his life.

He was born on a farm in Colfax township, April 7th, 1875. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Arend Meyer, who were among the early residents of Colfax township. On June 8th, 1898, Peter Meyer and Kate Freese were married in Grundy Center. For a number of years they lived on a farm east of Wellsburg, after which they moved to Wellsburg where he was engaged in the hardware business. In 1908 they purchased a farm a mile east of Holland, where they lived for 20 years, after which they quit farming and moved to Wellsburg where they spent the remainder of their lives.

Was County Supervisor
Like his father before him, Peter Meyer served two terms as county supervisor from the Colfax-Lincoln district. He also served as a director in the Grundy Mutual Insurance Association. After returning to Wellsburg, Mr. Meyer had charge of an oil station in that town.

Surviving are two sons and two daughters. The sons are Arthur, Grants Pass, Oregon, and Carl, Wellsburg. The daughters are Mrs. Clarence Beecroft, Wellsburg, and Mrs. Harold Kluver, Waterloo. There are five grandchildren.

Other surviving members of his family are one brother and three sisters. The brother is Sheriff John Meyer; the sisters are Mrs. Con Haack, Parkersburg, Mrs. George A. Geerdes and Mrs. H. C. Haack, Wellsburg. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1946, by a son Donald in 1930, and by a son LeRoy, former county auditor, in 1948.

Funeral Services Saturday
The body will be at the home in Wellsburg where services will be held at 1:30 Saturday and later at the Second Christian Reformed church at Wellsburg, of which Mr. Meyer was a member. The services will be conducted by Rev. John Olthoff. Burial will be in Shiloh cemetery, Wellsburg.
