Rites Held For Tena Johnson
Tena Johnson, 101, passed away Saturday, April 27, at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington, where she had resided since 1985.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 30, at 1 p.m., at the First Reformed Church of Aplington, with the Rev. Jim Lemmenes officiating.
Casket Bearers were LuVerne Ross, Marvin Eilderts, Darrell Johnson, LuRay Neessen, Kent Johnson, and Lawrence VanHauen.
Interment was at the Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg.
Tena, the daughter of Hero and Jennie Venenga Schulte, was born on March 7, 1890, in Grundy County near Holland. She attended school in the area of her birth. She lost her mother when she was 7 years old.
On February 24, 1909, Tena was united in marriage to Henry J. Johnson in Grundy County. The couple farmed near Grundy Center, Wellsburg, and Aplington before moving to Aplington.
Tena was a member of the First Reformed Church of Aplington. She enjoyed time with her family, and her grandchildren as well as sewing and attending to her flowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry in 1957; one son, Harry in 1968; two sons-in-law, Dick Eilderts, and C. W. Chipp [sic]; five brothers, Henry, Sam, Chris, Frank, and Herman Schulte; one granddaughter, Carol Jean VanHauen, and one grandson.
Survivors include five daughters; Mrs. Martin (Pearl) Ross of Wellsburg, Jennie Eilderts of Aplington, Henrietta Shipp of Waterloo, Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Neessen of Ackley, and Marjorie Collings of Waterloo; one son and his wife, Fred and Tillie Johnson of Aplington; one daughter-in-law, Hermina Johnson of Wellsburg; one sister-in-law Nettie Schulte of Mountain Lake, MN; 23 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
Schwartz Funeral chapel in Aplington was in charge of arrangements.
