Clara A. deNeui, 94, of Wellsburg, passed away May 13 at Ackley Presbyterian Village. Funeral services were May 16 at St. John Lutheran Church in Wellsburg. Burial followed at Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. A memorial fund has been established.
Clara was born January 11, 1908, in Pleasant Township, Hardin County, the daughter of Herman and Maria (Winter) Panthen. Clara graduated from Eldora High School with a Normal Training Course on May 28, 1925 and taught for five years in the Hardin County school system.
On August 11, 1932, Clara was united in marriage to Abe deNeui at her parent's home in Eldora by Rev. C. Hesse. This union was blessed with two daughters and one son. They lived on a farm three miles northwest of Wellsburg from 1932 to 1968 when they moved to Wellsburg to the home which Abe built. They had celebrated 59 years of marriage at the time of Abe's death in 1991. Clara moved to Friendship Manor in Wellsburg in 1994 and in May 2000 became a resident of Presbyterian Village in Ackley.
Clara was a charter member of St. John Lutheran Church in Wellsburg, serving as a longtime Sunday School teacher and choir member, and served the ladies Aid and LWML in many capacities. She was also active in local community organizations, such as the Library Board, 4-H, Grundy County Fair and County Extension boards. Clara was also a member of the Shiloh Homemakers.
Survivors include one son, Ronald deNeui and his wife Karen of Wellsburg, two daughters, Kathleen Janssen and her husband Alfred of Waverly and Carol Zimmermann and her husband Tim of Iowa City; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Pauline deNeui of Winterset.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Abe; six sisters, an infant Johanna, Henrietta Doss, Lydia Harmon, Agnes Daleske, Marie Steinfeldt and Bertha Marske; and two brothers, Chris and Fred Panthen.
