Tena Schafter Dies Saturday Of Burns Received At Home

Miss Tena Schafer, 75, died at ? a.m. Saturday at University Hospitals in Iowa City of burns suffered when her clothing accidentally caught on fire at her home in Wellsburg last Thursday morning.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Doyen Funeral Home and at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. Harold Hollander officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Music was furnished by a men's quartet composed of Claus G. Primus, Melvin Haupt, Larry Riebkes and Arnold Eiten. Mrs. Henry Vandervoort Jr. was organist and Mrs. Charles Diehl pianist.

Casket bearers were Richard Schafer, Harlan Beninga, Bernard Beninga, Larry Kruse, David Kruse, and Donald Main.

In charge of flowers were Mrs. Henry Riebkes and Mrs. George Hayenga.

She was born on November 2, 1892, on a farm in Shiloh township, northwest of Wellsburg, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schafer (nee Martha Bernadena Deters). She attended the rural school in the area.

She lived with the Thomas Schafer family for many years and in 1961 she moved to Wellsburg where she cared for her aged father. He passed away in 1962.

She was a long time member of the First Christian Reformed Church having made confession of her faith in Jesus Christ on July 17, 1918.

Those who preceded her in death were her parents, 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Those left to mourn her passing are 4 sisters and 1 brother. Thomas Schafer of Wellsburg; Mrs. Bertha Meints of Allendale, Michigan; (Jennie) Mrs. Herman Beninga of Grundy Center; (Alena) Mrs. Ben Riekena of Grundy Center; and (Henrietta) Mrs. John H. Kruse of Wellsburg.
