Rites Held For Virgil Groninga

Virgil Groninga, 64, passed away at his home in Wellsburg on Tuesday evening, April 25.

Funeral services were held at the Second Christian Reformed Church, Wellsburg, on Friday, April 28, at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Jim Beranek officiating.

Richard Schafer sang "One Day At A Time" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." The accompanist was Mrs. LuRay Neessen, who also played selected numbers for the prelude and postlude.

Casket bearers were Cork Peterson, Cordell Peterson, Mark Peterson, Don Syhlman, Leonard Mumm, and Curt Adair.

The ushers were Elmer Fritzel, Herman Groote, and Kenny Bunger. Mrs. Bonnie Christians and Mrs. Edna Krull were in charge of the floral arrangements.

Interment was in the Shiloh Township Cemetery, Wellsburg.

Virgil C. Groninga was born July 19, 1924, at Parkersburg, the son of Luke J. and Grace Getting Groninga. While a young child, he and his family lived for three years in Minnesota. They then moved to a farm in Pleasant Valley township, Grundy county, where he grew up and attended Pleasant Valley #9 country school. After his schooling, Virgil farmed with his dad.

On May 17, 1944, Virgil was united in marriage to Gwen Ross, at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg. After their marriage, they farmed until 1961, when they moved and made their home in Wellsburg.

Virgil worked in the heavy construction business, mainly as a driver of low boy trucks, which transported heavy equipment to various job sites. At the time of his death, he was employed by Peterson Contractors, Inc., of Reinbeck, where he had worked for 17 years.

Virgil was a member of the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, of rural Wellsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Gwen, of Wellsburg; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Gilliam, of Des Moines, and Rosemary, of Wellsburg; three sons, Randy and Rick, both of Wellsburg, and Troy, of Roland; four grandchildren; his step-mother, Mrs. L. J. (Edith) Groninga, of Wellsburg; one brother, Bud, of Edmond, OK; and one sister, Mrs. Lawrence (Irma) Lutterman, of Wellsburg.

A memorial fund has been established.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
