Jean Fischer, 80, of Wellsburg passed away on Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Hospice Care Unit in Grundy Center of cancer.

Jean was born Nov. 14, 1918, in Maynard,the daughter of Leonard and Marie Meyer Arthur. She attended school in Mason City, Randalia, and graduated from Fayette High School in 1937. She later attended Upper Iowa University. Jean moved to Wellsburg in 1940 and taught elementary school. On July 30, 1942, she was united in marriage to Harold Fischer in Fayette. She worked with her husband in Fischer Insurance Agency in Wellsburg for many years.

Jean was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, Shiloh Homemakers, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; one sister, June Adair; and two grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Jim and wife Judy of Maxwell; two daughters, Nancy Montgomery of Claremore, OK, and Mary Fischer of Des Moines; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; two step-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Max Arthur and wife Pat of Lodi, WI.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the St.John Lutheran Church, Wellsburg, with Pastor Bruce Zimmermann officiating. Pallbearers were Bill Fischer, Paul Simler, Beau Montgomery, John Smith, Don Horner, and Leon Harms. Interment was at Shiloh Cemetery, Wellsburg.

Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church, Wellsburg Historical Society, or Grundy County Hospice. Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of arrangements.
