Dick Claassen Died At Age 76

Funeral services for Dick J. Claassen of 208 6th Street, Grundy Center, were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jerry VanCurler officiating. Mr. Claassen died Sunday evening, February 13, 1977 at the Schoitz Memorial hospital in Waterloo where he was taken by ambulance after suffering a circulatory disorder.

The Kruger Sisters sang "Open Thy Merciful Arms" and "Whispering Hope." They were accompanied by Mrs. Raymond Hinders, who also played selected prelude and postlude number. Pallbearers were Dirk Larsen, William Aswegan Jr., John R. Claassen, Delbert Meyer, Jonas Geerdes and Harlan Rust. Flower attendants were Mrs. Troy Anderson, Mrs. Harold Dirks and Mrs. Art Slifer. Harm G. Hook and Milf Meyer were ushers. Joseph Junker and Arnold Tjepkes provided cars for the family. Burial was in the Colfax Center Presbyterian church cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Friends and relatives returned to the church following the committal service for a period of fellowship and refreshments.

Dick was born January 29, 1901 in Wright county, Iowa, and attained the age of 76 years and 15 days. He was the son of John and Deadrika Graffee Claassen. On March 25, 1921 he was married to Fannie Andreessen at Grundy Center. After their marriage they farmed near Dike and later farmed in Lincoln and Colfax townships. He retired in 1964 and the family then moved to Grundy Center.

He is survived by his wife Fannie, one son, Clarence of RR2, Grundy Center, three daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Laurayne) Meyer of Waterloo, Mrs. Darlyne Larsen of Cedar Falls, and Mrs. Kenneth (DeLoris) Eilers of Holland, also 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and five sisters, Mrs. Lena Fisher of Aplington, Mrs. Ben J. (Anna) Geerdes of Steamboat Rock, Mrs. Pearl Meyer of Dike, Mrs. Albert (Bertha) Siefken of Marshalltown and Mrs. Harm (Ada) Klunder of Grundy Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one infant brother, one sister and one grandson.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
