Birdine Shirk Services Held

Birdine L. Shirk, of Grundy Center, passed away Wednesday, December 29, at the Long Term Care Unit, Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center of natural causes, having attained the age of 96 years, 1 month and 12 days.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 3, at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center at 10:30 a.m. with burial in the Alice Cemetery, rural Conrad. Rev. David Stellmon officiated the services.

Pallbearers were Leonard Ralston, Carroll Haren, Marlyn Peters, Kay Reynolds, Doug Arends and Don Price.

Memorials may be directed to the Long Term Care Unit of Grundy County Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Shirk was born November 17, 1897, in Melrose Township, Grundy County, the daughter of Edgar C. and Clara Elizabeth (Kline) Allen. She grew up in Melrose Township, attended Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and taught school in Palermo and Melrose Townships for two years before her marriage.

On March 21, 1918, she was united in marriage to Asa J. Shirk at her home farm in Grundy County. Bridine and Asa farmed until Asa's death on November 3, 1926. Birdine made her home in Grundy Center where she was a hairdresser for 20 years. In 1951, she purchased the Grundy Style Shop, which she ran until her retirement in the early 1970's.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Asa; two sons, Rex and Max; her parents; and two sisters, Faye Stover and Vallera Minnich.

Survivors include one son, Keith of Des Moines; one daughter, Arlene Drexler of Paris, TN; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Dolan Allan of Clearwater, FL.

The Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, was in charge of the arrangements.
