MRS. JACOB GROEN

Death Occurred at Aplington — Former Resident of German Twp.

Mrs. Gertje Groen, nee Zimmerman, was born on May 22, 1854 in Wiener, Eastfriesland, Germany, where she was educated and grew up to womanhood. In 1877 she was joined in marriage to Hinderkus Deters. This union was blessed with eight children, five daughters and three sons, one of whom died in infancy. In the year 1884 the family came to the United States of America, locating in the vicinity of Ackley, in German township, where the family resided many years. Mr. Deters died April 21, 1912, and nearly twenty years later Mrs. Deters and family removed to Aplington. Her death occurred at the family home on Sunday, March 5. She was united in marriage to Jacob Groen July 25, 1915.

Surviving are the husband; her children are Mrs. Alma Geiken, Aplington; Rev. Herman Deters, Willow Lake, S. Dak.; Henry Deters, Ackley; Mrs. Henrietta Harken, Shell Rock; Mrs. Gertrude Harken, at Aplington; Mrs. Hannah Harken, Austinville Mrs. Hannah Harken, Austinville; and Mrs. Florence Mennen, at Grundy Center. Six step-children: Christ Groen, Stuartville, Minn.; Mr. Amke Arends, Stout; Mrs. Peterike Van Hauen, Parkersburg; Mrs. Lena Peters, Holland; Mrs. Jennie Goldham, Parkersburg; and Lewis Groen, Simpson, Minn.; forty-one grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two brothers: Dietrich and Rikus, of Wiener, East Friesland, Germany.

Funeral services were held March 8, at the Reformed church, Revs. Henry Pannkuk and Janssen officiating.

Burial was in the West Friesland German Presbyterian church cemetery.
