Family Mourns Passing Of John Boekhoff

John Boekhoff passed away early Saturday morning, January 10, 1981, at the Marshalltown Area Community Hospital in Marshalltown due to a massive heart attack. He had been taken to the hospital on the previous day for treatment. He reached the age of 62 years, 7 months and 11 days.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 12, 1981 at 1:30 p.m. at the Second Christian Reformed Church. Pastor John H. Elenbaas officiated. Mrs. Ivan Slifer and Mrs. Harold Okones sang two duet numbers. Monica Doyen was organist. Flower attendants were Mrs. David Miller and Mrs. Gary James. Pall bearers were Dennis Boekhoff, Mervin Boekhoff, Roger Van Heiden, Virgil Byl, Donald Boheman, and Wayne Shugar. The interment service was held in the Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. A graveside flag folding ceremony was conducted by the local American Legion and Amvets Posts.

John Boekhoff was born at Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, on May 29, 1918, the son of John and Mary (Vanderwerf) Boekhoff. The family moved to a farm in Colfax Township southeast of Wellsburg in 1927, where John attended the rural school in the area. On October 10, 1951 he was united in marriage to Carrie Wubbens at Ackley. Following their marriage they made their home in Wellsburg all of their married life.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 in the European Theatre. Following his discharge he began working for Okones Implement Company in Wellsburg and worked there for 27 years. He also worked for about three years at the Turner Farm Store in Grundy Center.

John was a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg having joined by confession of faith on July 3, 1960.

Preceding him in death were: his father, John Boekhoff, Sr.; two brothers, Lawrence and Albert Boekhoff.

Those left to mourn his passing are: his wife, Carrie; his mother, Mrs. Mary Boekhoff of Wellsburg; six brothers and 11 sisters: Ben Boekhoff of Aplington; Mrs. Fannie Johnson of St. Cloud, Minnesota; Mrs. George (Anna) Tjabring of Parkersburg; Dick Boekhoff of St. Cloud, Minnesota; Mrs. Jennie Van Heiden of Wellsburg; Sam Boekhoff of Wellsburg; Mrs. Henry (Ella) Riebkes of Wellsburg; Mrs. Fred (Bertha) Kannegieter of Waterloo; Ernest Boekhoff of Aplington; Mrs. John (Carrie) Wehrman of Iowa Falls; George Boekhoff of Wellsburg; Mrs. Delbert (Grace) Hippen of Wellsburg; Mrs. Albert (Lorraine) Boekhoff of Harlingen, Texas; Mrs. Leland (Evelyn) Lentz of Williams; Mrs. Dale (Esther) Smith of Conrad; Mrs. Carroll (Marlys) Clark of Keokuk; Arnold Boekhoff of Wellsburg and many other relatives and friends.

Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
