Helene Ross Services Held

Helene Ross was born September 19, 1895 in Forrest, Illinois, the daughter of Helmer and Meta (Gronewald) Huisman. She passed away September 28 at the Long Term Care Unit of Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center having attained the age of 96 years and 9 days.

Funeral services were held on October 1 at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Calvin Vanderwerf officiating. Pallbearers were Lester Jamison, Bob Wolthoff, Ben Groote, Ted Meinert, Raymond Wolthoff, and Jim Brown. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Helene grew up near Strawn, Illinois. When she was 18, she moved to Renwick to live with her sister. Here she met Thomas Ross, whom she married on November 12, 1919 in Clarion. Helene and Tom farmed near Fergus Falls, MN, and later moved to Kenosha, WI, Aalexandria, Hampton, and then came to Grundy Center in 1965.

Helene was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a collector of poetry and wrote poetry for her own amusement. She loved music and was a good singer in her day.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Tom in 1969; three sisters; one infant sister; one brother; and one infant brother.

Helene is survived by one sister, Mrs. Grace Towner of Springfield, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of arrangements.
