Rites Held For Katherine Zech

Katherine Elizabeth (Liz) Zech was born December 4, 1916 in Colfax township, Holland, Iowa to Herman and Ubena (Kate) (Rozevink) Beenken. She fell asleep in death on September 11 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. She lived her life to the age of 74 years, 9 months, and 7 days. Her fight with caner began in 1990.

On September 13 at 1 p.m., Rev. Richard Dowling of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiated funeral services held at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center with interment being made at the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. Musical selections were "Where The Roses Never Fade" and "Blest Be The Tie That Binds" sung by Dean Harrenstein. Background selections were played by Mrs. Scott Huffman.

Serving as pallbearers were nephews of Katherine: Darrell Shuey, Larry Harrenstein, Harlan VanDeest, Dennis Beenken, Delbert Beenken, and Kenneth Buskohl.

At age 4, the family moved to Palermo township where she grew up, attended school at Palermo #3, helped with the farm work and taking care of her brothers and sisters. She was known to have picked 100 bushels of corn a day; and also had to milk the cow's each day before going to school.

On November 30, 1936 she was united in marriage to Julius E. Zech. They resided in Wellsburg until 1950. She was a pioneer at heart, following along side her husband to Mallard, Emmetsburg, Cedar Falls, and Des Moines when a shortage of work occurred. In the 60's she and her husband returned to Grundy County to reside. Katherine touched the lives of many people she came in contact with with her thoughtfulness, kindness, and consideration. Most of you will have very fond memories to cherish and hold. Her hobbies included being an avid fisherwoman, traveling with friends and family, crocheting, and bingo.

Katherine is the mother of two children, Charlotte Schipper of Des Moines, and Edward Zech of New Hartford. She is the grandmother to seven grandchildren: Michele Ridout, Patricia Wolf, Michael Ridout, Jeffery, Scott, Todd and Daniel Zech, and great-grandmother to James Ridout.

Katherine was preceded in death by her mother, father, and husband.

She is survived by her three sisters and three brothers; Mrs. Benjamin B. (Jennie) VanDeest of Holland, Mrs. Alvin G. (Grace) Harrenstein, Mrs. William (JoAnn) Garrett, Herman, Jake, and Lutjen (Sonny) Beenken, all of Grundy Center.

Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home of Grundy Center was in charge of arrangements.
