Rites Held For Gladys Luwe, 57

Gladys, Mrs. Leland D. Luwe, age 57, of West Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Wellsburg, Iowa, passed away at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, at 6:45 a.m., Saturday, June 27, from complications of cancer.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 30, at the Second Christian Reformed Church, Wellsburg, with the Rev. Orwin Duistermars officiating.

Her son, Randall Luwe, sang "Have Thine Own Way, Lord, accompanied by his sister, Ann Luwe.

Mrs. LuRay Neessen, organist, played for the congregational hymn and the prelude and postlude.

The casket bearers were Bernard Harms, Meint Bakker, Fred Feikes, Gary James, Alle Jaspers, Warren Lindaman and Fred Luppen.

The flower ladies were Mrs. Carrie Boekhoff, Mrs. Ann Murra and Mrs. Caryl Button.

Ushers were Virgil Byl, Herman Koch and Martin Ross.

Burial was in the Shiloh Township Cemetery, Wellsburg.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of arrangements.

Gladys, Mrs. Leland D. Luwe, was born on August 15, 1929, at Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Hattie Duisman Nielsen of Dike, Iowa.

Gladys was a graduate of Dike High School in 1946 and a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1950. Following graduation from college, she taught vocal music in Dows, Iowa, for 3 years and in Wellsburg, for 1 year. She also taught in Iowa City, Iowa and in Knoxville, Illinois schools after she was married.

She was baptized in the Methodist Church and was a member of the Dike Methodist Church until transferring her membership to the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg, where she was the Choir Director for 21 years. She was a member of the Church's Helping Hand Society and was a Past President of that organization. She also directed the choir at the First Christian Reformed Church of Wellsburg for 2 years.

On June 22, 1954, she was united in marriage to Leland D. Luwe at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg. To this union was born a son, Randall Scott, and a daughter, Ann Kirsten.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Leland D. Luwe, her son Randall Scott Luwe and his wife Pamela of Pleasantville, Iowa, her daughter Ann Kirsten Luwe, of Ankeny, Iowa, two grandsons Alan James and Matthew Luwe of Pleasantville, Iowa, and a brother Wayne Nielsen of Waterloo, Iowa.

She and her husband had just recently moved to West Des Moines, Iowa, for their retirement years.

She entered the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines on June 10, for treatment of cancer.
