Mrs. Dirks Buried At Holland And Miss Schmidt At The Colfax Center Cemetery
Miss Martha Lena Schmidt, seventeen, daughter of Mrs. Renco Schmidt, passed away Wednesday of last week, at the University hospital at Iowa City, the result of burns she suffered about three months ago when kerosene which she was using to light a fire exploded, burning her severely.
Following the accident she was treated at the Deaconess Hospital, Marshalltown, for six weeks until her condition was such as to allow her to be accepted at the University Hospital to undergo skin grafting, but after three months of suffering she passed away.
Funeral services were held at the Colfax Center Lutheran church, on Saturday afternoon, October 12th, by the pastor of the church, the Rev. Charles Swalve, assisted by Rev. J. E. Drake.
Pallbearers were Herbert Van Deest, Raymond Van Deest, Clarence Ennenga, George Everts, William Hinders and Virgil Gettings.
Honorary pallbearers were Marcella Meyer, IvaDel Meyer, Arlene Meyer, Arvilla Meyer, Helen Louise Meyer, Lorraine Tack, Lillian Lutzenberg, Velma Mients, Phyllis Tjepkes, Anana Kruger, Ivadean Heronimus, Hilda Dirks and Irene Hook, all members of her Sunday school class.
Miss Schmidt was born January 15, 1923, and had completed her junior year in the Grundy Center high school. Her father preceded her in death two years ago, and she leaves to mourn her passing her mother, Mrs. Renco Schmidt; two brothers, Renco, Jr., and Carl; and five sisters, Mrs. Henry Werkman, Lucy, Margaret, Esther and Irene, all of Holland.
Interment was made in the Colfax Center cemetery.
