Emily E. O'Connor, 78, of 2237 E. Highway 34, died at 11:10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 in her home.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dike, with the Rev. Dennis Quint officiating. Burial will be at the St. Mary cemetery.
Family visitation is pending at the Hagarty Wycruft Grup Funeral Home in Waterloo.
A memorial service for all friends, family, colleagues, and former students will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday with family present at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield. Coffee & cake fellowship and sharing of memories will be held following the service at DeCoursey Hall in the Church. Deacon Art Anderson will be officiating at the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Education Foundation of Fairfield Public Schools, Inc. at 607 E. Broadway Ave., Fairfield 52556.
Ms. O'Connor was born June 16, 1923, in Waterloo, the daughter of Edward and Luella Thornton O'Connor.
She was born and raised in Reinbeck and graduated valedictorian from Dike High School in Dike. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Clarke College in Dubuque and earned a master's degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo. In 1943, she moved to Fairfield and began her teaching career. She served as a business education instructor at Fairfield High School in the areas of typing, business law, accounting, marketing and management and general business for 42 years. She served as chairman of the department, as well as sponsor of many youth related groups, activities, and graduating classes.
Her professional membership included: Fairfield Community Education Association, Iowa State & National Business Educator's Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was long-time member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Fairfield. Her pastimes included reading, golfing and traveling.
Survivors include three brothers, Paul O'Connor of Reinbeck, Thomas O'Connor of Sioux City and James O'Connor of Central City; and two sisters, Theresa Bennett of Lake Wood, Colo., and Mary Jo Schreck of Reinbeck.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
