Death of Berend Engelkes

Burial At Siemsen Church, of Which He Was Member

Berend Minden Engelkes was born September 29, 1864, at Visquard, Ostf. He came with his mother to America in 1884, 3 years after his brothers, John, Omko and Hillert had come. They settled in Grundy county and in 1892 Mr. Engelkes was married to Swantje Meester, daughter of Henry Meester. To this union were born eight children, four sons and four daughters. Since their marriage they have resided on the home place in Colfax township. Mr. Engelkes died last Friday, April 6, at the age of 58 years, 6 months and 7 days. His father and mother, two brothers and one sister, Mrs. Geerd Doeden, preceded him in death.

His death leaves his wife, eight children, two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, his wife's father and mother, and two brothers of his immediate relatives. Burial took place at the Siemsen cemetery, services being held at the church of which he was a member. They were largely attended. Mr. Engelkes was a kind husband and loving father, highly respected by all who knew him, always willing to lend a helping hand, especially in church and mission circles.
