Emil Agena, of Norden, Germany, was born September 21, 1839. On April 1, in the early sixties, he left Bremen, Germany, with a sail ship and landed at Quebec, Canada, and then went to Ogle county, Ill., June 16, where he commenced to work for a wealthy stock farmer. In July, 1872, he was married to Annie Peters. To this union ten children were born, four infants and two sons, Emil and Edward, who preceded him in death and four daughters, who are still living. They came to Iowa, March 12, 1885, arriving at Parkersburg, Iowa, and settling on a farm in Pleasant Valley township, Grundy county. In December, 1908, they retired and moved to near Cleves, until March 16, 1919, when Mrs. Agena passed away. After that Mr. Agena made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Heiko J. Muller, and family. He passed away Wednesday forenoon, April 18, 1923, at 10:30, at the age of 83 years, 6 months and 28 days. Funeral services were held on Saturday at 1 o'clock at the home and then at the Engelkes, or Ostfriesland church, of which he was a member. Interment was in the cemetery adjoining the church. To mourn his loss are four daughters, Mrs. Katherine Muller, of Cleves; Mrs. Delia Wickers, of Stout; Mrs. Anna Diekhoff, of Stewartville, Minn., and Mrs. Ida Meester, of Parkersburg; also twenty-seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Agena was a kind and loving father, a good neighbor and friend, who was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
