Mrs. John F. Meester Dies Leaving 107 Descendants

Mrs. John F. Meester, one of the five of the original Meester families who came to Grundy county over 70 years ago, died at Ellsworth, Minn., the past week. The five Meester families from whom the hundreds of descendants have grown came from Germany to Forreston, Ill., in 1865. Two years later they came to Grundy county. They located on farms in the north part of the county. Members of the family who came here at that time were John, Daniel, Henry, Harm and Jacob. Henry and Harm were twins. One sister, Mrs. Grace Nederhoff, came here with them. John and Harm moved to Lyon county. The remainder of the family stayed here.

Mrs. John Meester, wife of the oldest of the Meester brothers, who died recently, left 107 descendants, among whom there are 38 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and one a fifth-generation child. She was 93 years old. During the past year she suffered much and was confined to her bed most of the time.

Her maiden name was Engel Buus and her birthplace was in Twixlum, Ostfriesland, Germany, she having been born July 19, 1845. In 1865, twenty years later, she immigrated to America, going first to Forreston, Ill., where she was married to John Meester. They lived at Forreston for two years and then moved to Parkersburg, Iowa, the family home for 19 years, before coming to the Carter ranch 6 miles southwest of Ellsworth, Minn., before locating on their own farm on the Iowa side of the state line in that vicinity. They labored hard and were saving.
