Evert Riekena Died Last Thursday After Brief Illness

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at the home and later at the Reformed church for Evert J. Riekena who passed away at his home last Thursday afternoon on Nov. 13, 1952. He reached the age of 69 years, 2 months, and 16 days. Interment was in the Shiloh Cemetery.

The departed passed away rather suddenly. It was only three days of illness which was not considered serious at first, but on Thursday morning, the fourth day, he was afflicted with what is commonly called a stroke paralyzing his throat which soon became fatal.

Mr. Riekena was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Johannes W. and Amke Riekena. He was born on the farm three and one half miles west of Wellsburg on Aug. 28, 1883. On March 6, 1909, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ross at Monroe, South Dakota, and the marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. F. Reeverts. This union was blest with four children.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Riekena farmed south of Monroe, for two years until October of 1910, when they moved to Wellsburg on the farm where he was born. They resided there until the year 1943 when they moved to the town of Wellsburg for retirement. The deceased was blest with fruits upon his labor and management. As father and husband he was devoted to the family. He looked forward to spend many more days with blessing in their home in which they moved only five weeks ago.

At his passing he leaves to mourn his deeply bereaved wife and the four children: John E. and Emery both of Wellsburg; Jeanette, Mrs. Melvin Tack of Aplington; and Diane, Mrs. Fred Walbaum of Grundy Center; ten grandchildren; two brothers, Wiard of Wellsburg and Fred of Monroe, South Dakota. One sister, Annie of Wellsburg also survives along with many other relatives and friends.

The deceased was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Dick, Ben, and Trieno, and two grandsons.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Riekena, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Riekena, Renke and Peter and Mr. and Mrs. Gratus Riekena all of Forest City; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Riekena of Maxwell; Mr. and Mrs. Abe Voogd of Aplington; Edze and Reinhart Aukes both of Buffalo Center; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Doonan and Mrs. Carrie Thomas all of Marshalltown; Lawrence Ackerman of Iowa Falls; Mrs. Fred Widmann of Waterloo; Dick Jutting, Martin Ryken and Mrs. Joe Boelman all of Ackley; Mrs. George Dykstra of Marion, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Heye Ross and Rodger of Renville, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Riekena and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Riekena all of Monroe, South Dakota.
