Eike Ruter Died Sunday After A Year's Illness

Eike Ruter died at his home in Shiloh township at 8:30 Sunday evening following an illness from cancer for about a year. He was operated upon at the Deaconess hospital at Marshalltown last June but the family were told at the time that there was no cure for his illness. He was confined to his bed during the past eight weeks. He was 78 years old. He was born on a Shiloh township farm and resided in this township all of his life.

Married 50 Years Ago
Mr. Ruter and Trentje Luppen were married 50 years ago on the 25th of last March. There was no formal celebration on the date of their golden wedding because of the weakened condition of Mr. Ruter's health. The couple were married by Rev. Timmerman who at that time was pastor of the First Christian Reformed church west of Wellsburg. They began housekeeping on a farm three miles southwest of Wellsburg which has been their home ever since.

Raised a Family of 13
Mr. and Mrs. Ruter raised a family of thirteen children. One child died in infancy. All of the children excepting one daughter are residing in this vicinity.

Of this large family, five are sons and eight are daughters. The sons are Herman, Fred, Peter and Eike Jr. who live in this vicinity and John who lives near Grundy Center. The daughters are Mrs. John Henricks, Jessie, Mrs. Henry Rieken, Mrs. Roy DeNeui and Alice from this locality, Mrs. John Meyer, Parkersburg, Mrs. George Beck, Des Moines, and Mrs. Delbert Lindaman, Wellsburg. There are ten grandchildren.

One grandson who was in the U.S. army completed his training a few weeks ago and obtained his honorable discharge.

Funeral Services Wednesday
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon. There was a short service at the home at 12:30 and later in the Reformed church in Wellsburg. Rev. Edward Jurgens was the officiating pastor. Burial was in the cemetery adjoining the First Christian Reformed church west of Wellsburg where his parents are buried.
