Christena Friedirike Woods, 108, passed away Friday, April 20, 2012.

She was born November 7, 1903 in Wellsburg, IA the daughter of James W. and Carlena (Ascher) Dekker. Christena moved to Elrod, SD when she was 3 years old and lived there until she married Charles R. Woods in 1924. She and Charles moved to Des Moines, IA and in 1935 moved to Independence, MO. Christena was a Gold Star Mother, losing her eldest son, Irving, in 1944 when his plane was shot down over Hungary.

She faithfully attended St. Ann’s Catholic Church and was an officer of the Altar Society. Christena had several hobbies, and with five boys, sports were one of her interests. She cheered for the Royals and the Chiefs whether they were winning or losing.

She spent hours crocheting and when she was 97 she crocheted 28 centerpiece doilies for her favorite fundraiser, Grandma’s Alzheimer Dinner, which was begun in memory of her dear friend, Caroline Kobe. She continued to support the dinner by crocheting a tablecloth and a bedspread for the dinner’s auctions.

When she was 88, she wrote the story of her life and her husband and five sons. This was published in a book and she gave copies to her family members.

Christena was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Woods in 1978; sons, Irving Woods in 1944, Francis “Pudge” Woods in 2004; daughter in law, Teresa Woods in 2010; two sisters; five brothers; and her parents.

Survivors include her sons, James H. Woods of Overland Park, KS, Charles “Porky” Woods and wife Mary Lou of Sugar Creek, MO, Joseph Woods and wife Kathleen of Sugar Creek, MO; daughter in law Muriel Woods of Independence; 11 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church; 10113 Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64053. Burial to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Grandma’s Alzheimer’s Fund, c/o Truman Heartland Community Foundation or St. Ann’s Catholic Church.
