Obituary of Mrs. Albert Saathoff

Mrs. Janna Janssen Saathoff was born October 3, 1843, at Moehlenwarf, Eastfriesland, Germany. April 9, 1876, she was united in marriage to Mr. Albert Saathoff. In April, 1881, they came to this country and established their new home in Grundy county, Iowa.

Seven children were born to them, two of whom died in earliest infancy, and later at a maturer age three daughters, Bertha, Mrs. Cornelius Dirks and Mrs. John Hempen preceded their mother in death.

Her physical affliction was one of long standing and for the last 10 months she was confined to her bed. Husband and granddaughter attended to her needs with loving and tender ear. Her soul was sustained by a living faith in her Savior, whom she confessed publicly years ago by uniting with the Holland Presbyterian church and in 1908 with the German Presbyterian church of this city. She was a member also of the Ladies' Aid of this church and even while frailty and weakness of body increased, her interest in the work of the church never faded. The visits of the pastor were to her and him seasons of refreshing and never did she fail to voice her thanks for the words of comfort and encouragement spoken.

On Wednesday, August fifteenth, at about six o'clock in the evening, she breathed her last and fell asleep in Jesus. She attained the age of 84 years, 10 months and 12 days.

She is survived by her aged husband, one sister, Mrs. M. DeBerg; a brother, Henry Janssen; a daughter, Mrs. B. VanDeest; a son, the Rev. John Saathoff, pastor of the Presbyterian church at West Liberty, Iowa; many grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, August 18, at the German Presbyterian church, at which Rev. J. E. Drake, D. D., and Rev. K. J. Stratemeier, Th. D., spoke words of comfort. Interment was made at the Colfax township cemetery.
