John Etzen, for many years a resident of Fern, died Sunday, Nov. 19, at the home of his son John at Dumont, where he had made his home the past two years.

Brief funeral services were held at Dumont, followed by burial in Salem Lutheran cemetery, north of Fern. Rev. Geo. F. Dirks officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Herman Lumkes, Henry Freese, O. Engelkes, Albert Kruger, Byron Soles and Henry Aswegan.

John William Etzen was born Jan. 20, 1854, in Schottjedresche, Germany. There he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and on Apr. 23, 1881, was united in marriage to Ekke Helen Tonjes of Osteel, Ostfriesland.

In 1903 the family came to American, their destination being Parkersburg, Iowa. They established their residence at Fern, where the deceased lived until two years ago when he went to live with his son John at Dumont. Mr. Etzen was a tiler by vocation. He held church membership in Salem Lutheran church.

Six children were born to the Etzen union. Of these, one died in infancy. Preceding the deceased in death are also his wife, who passed away a few years ago, and the oldest son, William.

Last week Thursday the departed suffered a light stroke, which resulted, however, in his death on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 12 o'clock noon. He attained the advanced age of 89 years, 10 mos. and 1 day.

Surviving children are Mrs. Dave Aswegen, Stewartville, Minn.; Mrs. Ella Hinricks, Parkersburg; John Etzen, Dumont; Mrs. Will Rottmeyer, Dike. He leaves also thirteen grandchildren.
