James Woodside, who was so well known in this locality and whose death has been briefly mentioned in this paper, deserves more than a passing notice. He was born in the north of Ireland of Scotch parentage, being one of a family of nine children, six of whom have died at an age exceeding 80 years, three still surviving. When but nineteen years old he removed to Philadelphia, at which place he was united in marriage to Eliza McBride, with whom for forty-seven years he trod life's journey and beside her, whose memory he loved and cherished to the last, he is, by his own request, now laid to rest in Buckner cemetery. He was brought to this city for burial September 3. James Woodside was the last one of the elders who formed the Presbyterian church at this place. He had a kindly feeling for all orthodox denominations but reverently and sincerely loved the church of his choice. It was one of his greatest griefs when by reason of increasing infirmity he could no longer regularly attend the service in God's house. Religion to him was existence. When in health he always spoke of death freely and calmly and when his last sickness came he was as "one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lays down to pleasant dreams." That such dreams were his none could doubt who saw the look of rapture on his face as his spirit took its flight to receive the reward of years of unshaken faith in the blood of an atoning Saviour. His long cherished wish to depart and be with Christ was realized September 1, 1896, at the ripe old age of 82 years and 1 month. He leaves two sons, W. J. Woodside of Ivester, and Thomas, residing at El Paso, Texas, and a daughter, Mrs. S. W. Boyd of Fremont, Nebraska. Two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Houston of Glasgow, Scotland, and Mrs. Rebecca Sloan of Philadelphia, and a brother, Thomas Woodside of Glasgow, also survive him.
