Dr. Mark Koerner, 57, of Howard, Ohio, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010, while vacationing in Cancún, Mexico. Memorial services will be held in Ohio and California. Private graveside services will be held at a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery, Grundy Center, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Pathways to Medicine Scholarship Program at Columbus State Community College or the Grundy Center Community Schools Foundation. Funeral arrangements, in Iowa are entrusted to Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.

Mark Alan Koerner was born March 17, 1953, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Vance and Dorothy Koerner. He graduated from Grundy Center High School with the class of 1971. He received his Bachelor of Science degree and graduated summa cum laude from Northeast Missouri State University (now known as Truman State University). He attended NMSU 3 years, and his fourth year he studied at the University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. After completion of his studies at the U of I, he began a residency in OB/GYN in Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1981, he began his private practice of medicine in Columbus, Ohio. One of the highlights of his medical career was when he delivered a set of quadruplets.

Mark joined the faculty of Columbus State Community College in 2006. He was the lead instructor for their anatomy program. He also taught courses in physiology and pathophysiology. He co-authored a textbook which is due to be published in late summer or early fall. He was loved by the faculty and students.

He married Nancy Kuhn on August 13, 1980 in Indianapolis. They later divorced. Mark liked to travel and especially enjoyed his annual fishing trip to Canada. He was a member of Liberty Barn Presbyterian Church of Delaware, Ohio. He loved his family, his friends, his students and his God.

He is deeply missed by his survivors, who include his mother, Dorothy Koerner of Groveland, California; his daughter, Megan Nash and husband Bill of Grove City, Ohio; his son, Sergeant Neal Koerner, currently serving in the US Army in Iraq; his granddaughter, Lillian Rose Nash; his sister, Vanessa Hall and husband Mark of Groveland, California; and his girlfriend, Cynthia Gardner, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
