Paul P. Robertson, 90, of Grundy Center, Iowa, formerly of Reinbeck, Iowa, died Friday, August 28, 2009, at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 31, 2009, at the Saint John's Lutheran Church in Reinbeck, Iowa, with Pastor Bruce Boyce officiating. Burial will follow at the Reinbeck Cemetery in Reinbeck. Visitation will be Sunday, August 30, 2009, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M., with the family present to greet friends, at French Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Valley Lutheran Middle and High School in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Paul Robertson was born November 6, 1918, on the family farm in rural Reinbeck, the son of Raleigh Walter and Tena (Bulthuis) Robertson. He grew up in the Reinbeck area graduating from Reinbeck High School in 1936. On February 5, 1942, Paul enlisted in the Army during War II and was assigned to the 493 Fighter Squadron of the 9th Army Air Corp. He served at Normandy and during the battle of the bulge in Belgium. Paul was awarded six Bronze Stars, a good conduct medal and attained the rank of Technical Sgt. He was discharged on November 11, 1945.
On June 25, 1943, Paul was united in marriage to Lorna Ramsey. After his discharge from the service they farmed north of Reinbeck until retirement. They continued to live on the farm until November of 2008 when they moved to Arlington Place in Grundy Center. He was an active member at St. John's Lutheran Church in Reinbeck, serving on numerous boards as well as teaching Sunday school. Paul served on the board of directors of the Morrison Co-op, the Reinbeck Co-op, Grundy County REC for 18 years, as well as the Cornbelt Power Cooperative. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling with his wife and many fishing trips to Canada. His greatest love was working on the farm of which he had a long and successful career.
Paul is survived by his wife, Lorna of Grundy Center; children, Ann Hillestad (Charles) of Cannon Beach, OR; Steve Robertson and his wife Debra of Reinbeck,; Jon Robertson and his wife Jamie of Hudson,; 4 granddaughters, Ellen (Brad) Schweppe of Reinbeck; Abbey Robertson of Des Moines; Lydia (Ali Al-Rabie) Robertson of Reinbeck; Emily (Tyler) Haskovec of Louisville, KY; 4 grandsons, Collin Robertson, Las Vegas, NV; Evan Robertson of Cedar Falls; Nathan Robertson of Des Moines; Braden Robertson of Hudson; great grandchildren, Max, Alex and Sophia Schweppe, Sami and Rayyan Al-Rabie, Reese Haskovec, and a sister Rosie Moser along numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers; Henry and Harold, three sisters; Harriett, Dorothy and Katherine.
