Eugene "Gene" L. Huisman, 89, of Holland, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M., Saturday, September 30, 2006, at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center, Iowa, with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Hazel Green Cemetery, rural Cleves, Iowa, where full military rites will be provided by the Grundy Center American Legion Post #349 and AMVETS Post #17. Visitation will be Friday, September 29, 2006, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, Iowa, with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. A memorial fund has been established.
Eugene "Gene" Leo Huisman was born December 24, 1916, at home on the farm in rural Wellsburg, Iowa, the son of Meint and Ellen (Lamb) Huisman. Gene received his education attending rural country school near Wellsburg, and graduated from Wellsburg High School. On March 11, 1940, Gene was united in marriage to Helen Hess at the Episcopalian Church in Waterloo, Iowa. After their marriage they made their home in Wellsburg. That same year, Gene and Helen purchased Gene's Tavern in Wellsburg, which they owned and operated. On May 10, 1944, Gene was inducted into the United States Navy. He served his country during WWII and was honorably discharged on January 1, 1946. After returning home from military service, he worked at the meat market in Wellsburg, and also did carpentry work in the area until they bought the meat locker in Holland, Iowa, in 1952. Together, they operated the locker in Holland until retirement in 1986. Gene and Helen enjoyed sixty six years of marriage together. Gene was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. He loved to work with children, and had been a little league coach in Holland for many years. Gene had also been the manager of the Men's Fast Pitch Softball Team, taking them to both State and National Competitions. Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman, traveling to Red Lake, Ontario Canada to Gamon Lake to fish for many many years. He also liked to garden.
He is survived by his wife Helen Huisman of Holland, Iowa; two sons Leo Huisman of Grundy Center, Iowa; Bob Huisman and his wife Ruby of Clinton, Missouri; two grandchildren Marshall Huisman of Clinton, Missouri and Linnsey Huisman-Rhodes and her husband Jason of Newark, Delaware; and two brothers Ralph Huisman and his wife Virginia of Wellsburg, Iowa; and Mayo "Mike" Huisman and his wife Shirley of Rapid City, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Herbert, Lester "Spec", and Eldon Huisman; one sister Wanda Short; and one nephew Mike Huisman.
