Bernerd J. Harms, 76, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at his home in Wellsburg, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Friday, November 9, 2007, at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland, Iowa, with Pastor Larry Hoop and Pastor Larry Doughan officiating. Burial will follow in the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church Cemetery, rural Holland. Visitation will be Thursday, November 8, 2007, from 4:00 P. M. to 8:00 P.M., with the family present to greet friends, at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. Memorials may be directed to the family or to Cedar Valley Hospice-Grundy Center.

Bernerd James Harms, 76, of Wellsburg, Iowa, was born March 22, 1931, in rural Grundy County, Iowa, the son of George E. and Berdene (Kruger) Harms. Bernerd attended rural country school at Colfax No. 3, and then attended Wellsburg High School, graduating with the Class of 1949. After high school graduation, Bernerd helped his dad at the hardware store in Holland, and he also worked for C.B. Sonnenberg Trucking. On January 24, 1952, Bernerd enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country until January 17, 1956, when he was honorably discharged. Upon returning home from the service, Bernerd began work at the bank in Steamboat Rock.

On April 12, 1957, Bernerd was united in marriage to Francys L. Hayungs at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland. In 1958, Bernerd attended Gates Business College in Waterloo and worked at John Deere. In 1959, he became a banker at Peoples Savings Bank in Wellsburg, and worked there until his retirement in February 1988. Bernerd was employed in banking for over thirty-one years. After his retirement, Bernerd delivered motor homes for Winnebago for a short time, and then drove for Iowa Coaches for several years.

Bernerd was a lifelong and faithful member of Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. Throughout his years of service to the church, Bernerd held many positions. Throughout the years had served as an Elder, a Deacon, a member of the Pulpit Nominating Committee, and he had served as the Church Treasurer for twenty-nine years. Bernerd also served as Treasurer of the Heartland Presbytery from its inception in 1989 until the formation of the Iowa Presbytery in 2001, at which time he became treasurer of that church body-serving until December 2005. In January 2006, Bernerd was honored by the church body as Treasurer Emeritus and Elder Emeritus. Bernerd also served on the Wellsburg School Board for many years as treasurer.

He is survived by his wife Fran Harms of Wellsburg, Iowa; three daughters- Kay Besore and her husband John of Mattoon, Illinois; Deb Heikens-Meza and her husband Jesse of Chico, California; Karmen Mundt and her husband Bud of Houston, Texas; and one son-Darwin Harms of Wellsburg, Iowa; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister-Erna Toomsen and her husband Duane of Des Moines, Iowa; and one brother Garyld Harms and his wife Lois of Bloomington, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents- George and Berdene Harms; and one grandchild in infancy-Clint Heikens.
