Mrs. Hiske DeVries, nee Spieker, was born in Grundy county, Iowa, on January 18, 1870. In 1896 she was married to Folkert DeVries. To this union eight children were born. Her husband died May 14, 1911. After his passing Mrs. DeVries continued to live on the farm until 1930 when she moved to the town of Aplington. She was taken to Allen Memorial hospital where she remained over two weeks. On Nov. 1st she suffered a stroke and passed away that evening, reaching the age of 80 years, 9 months, 13 days.

Mrs. DeVries was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church, Ackley, but attended the Reformed church at Aplington very faithfully while she lived there.

She leaves to mourn: three daughters, Mrs. Ella Huesman, Ackley, Mrs. Anna Boelman of Aplington and Mrs. Lenora Janssen of Ackley. Five sons: Fred of Dike, Jerry and Carl of Ackley, Herman of Wellsburg and Edward of Aplington. Two sisters, Mrs. Menno Kuper of Ackley and Mrs. Matie Frerichs of Gladbrook. One brother, Jerry J. Speiker, of Wellsburg, twenty-two grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; also many relatives and friends.
