Johanna Henrietta Johnson was born June 18, 1920, on the family farm near Dumont, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Elizabeth [Penning] Johnson. She was the oldest of six children. As a young girl she remembered walking to school and church in town. She attended the Dumont, Iowa Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1938. On September 5, 1940, she was united in marriage to Gordon Bohlen. To this union six children were born: Verle, Pauline, Joline, Darrell, Gary, and Jerold. The couple farmed for twenty-five years around the Ackley, Iowa, area and in 1965, they retired from farming and moved to Ackley. As Johanna was a very artistic person; the move to town gave her time to devote to her hobbies and crafts. Johanna was an avid gardener and flower arranger. Her friends and family loved to stop and admire her beautiful flower beds. With her green thumb she could make a flower grow almost anywhere. In the winter months you would find Johanna making one of her many quilts and doing her embroidery items, which she would give away as gifts.

Johanna and Gordon also loved to bird watch as they had many unique bird feeders. If you stopped to visit Johanna and she was gone, likely she and Gordon were out driving in the country enjoying nature. Gordon passed away in 1994 and Johanna continued to live in her home until June 2002. She then moved to assisted living in Waterloo and in November of 2003 became a resident of Maple Manor.

Johanna Bohlen is survived by three sons: Verle (Marlys) Bohlen of Wellsburg, Iowa, Gary (Ann) Bohlen of Mason City, Iowa, Darrell (Connie); two daughters: Pauline (Larry) Woodley of Ackley, Iowa, Joline (Tom) Miller of Cedar Falls; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; three sisters: Harriett Hemmen of Aplington, Iowa, Doris (Melvin) Karsjens of Parkersburg, Iowa, Elizabeth Lursen of Aplington, Iowa, and one brother: Joe (Donna) Johnson of Hampton, Iowa.
