Ethel Etta Avery, age 99, of Aplington, Iowa, was born October 18, 1909, the daughter of Lambert and Lena DeWeerdt Hoffman at home near Buck Grove in Grundy County, Iowa. She received her education in the Pleasant Valley Country School near Buck Grove.

Ethel was united in marriage with David John Avery on February 11, 1937, at a Baptist Church in Waterloo, Iowa. The couple made their home in New Hartford and later farmed near Dumont, Allison, Aplington and Wellsburg. When they lived near Aplington, they ran the Buck Grove Grocery Store until David died in 1980. She moved into Aplington in the early 1980’s.

Ethel was a member of the Aplington Baptist Church. In addition to operating the grocery store, she enjoyed taking care of her home. She liked to work crossword puzzles, put together puzzles, play bingo and cards. Most of all, the times spent with her family gathered around were highlights for her.

Ethel died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Maple Manor Village Assisted Living, Aplington, Iowa, of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Avery; a grandson, Neal Cooper; her parents; two sisters, Vera Hoffman and Leona Hoffman; and three brothers, John, Carl and Louis Hoffman.

Ethel is survived by three daughters, Charlotte (Charles) Miller, Randall, Iowa, Ivadeen (Dean) Proffitt, Marshalltown, Iowa and Norleen (Paul) Willis, Aplington, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; one step great great-grandchild; one sister-in-law, Luebertha Hoffman, Parkersburg, Iowa; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services are set for 2:00 p.m., Friday at Aplington Baptist Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, Aplington.

Visitation is an hour before services Friday at the church.

Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
