Luella Elizabeth Van Heiden, age 87, of Aplington, Iowa, was born July 4, 1921, the daughter of Herman and Flossie (Arends) Frey, in Butler County, Iowa. She was baptized and became a member of the First Reformed Church in Aplington, Iowa. She received her education at the New Hartford School.

On November 30, 1942, she was united in marriage to John Van Heiden at the First Reformed Parsonage in Aplington, Iowa. To this union three children were born. The couple made their home on the family farm near Buck Grove in Grundy County, Iowa. In 1960, they moved and farmed north of Parkersburg were they lived for 19 years and later moved back to the family farm again. In 1997, they retired and moved to their present home in Aplington.

Luella attended the First Reformed Church in Aplington. She enjoyed reading, baking, gardening and farming with her husband John. Luella and John, along with her sister Bertha enjoyed going to gospel and blue grass music and vacationing in Branson, Missouri. Luella cherished time spent with family and friends. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life.

Luella died Saturday, January 17, 2009, at the Maple Manor Village in Aplington, Iowa, from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John Dale Van Heiden on April 11, 2005; one son, Duane Dale Van Heiden on October 17, 1994 and one brother, Siebe Frey.

Luella is survived by two daughters, Betty (Steve) Adelmund of Parkersburg, Iowa and Janet (Randy) Patterson of Aplington, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Donna Rostad of Allison, Iowa; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one brother, Herman (Eunice) Frey of Parkersburg, Iowa; two sisters, Bertha Sents of Wellsburg, Iowa and Florence Ruth of Grundy Center, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Irene Frey of Aplington, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at the First Reformed Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
