J. Howard Sheller, 88, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died Friday, September 19, 2008, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, September 22, 2008, at Ivester Church of the Brethren, rural Grundy Center, Iowa, with Pastor Dennis L. Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Sheller Cemetery, rural Eldora, Iowa. Visitation will be Sunday, September 21, 2008, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. A memorial fund has been established.
John Howard Sheller was born February 2, 1920, at home on the farm in Melrose Township, rural Grundy County, Iowa, the son of John Iler and Alice Myrtle (Schwab) Sheller. He attended rural country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Conrad High School with the class of 1937.
On July 16, 1943, Howard was united in marriage to Katherine Freed at Ivester Church of the Brethren. After their marriage, they made their home on the family farm. They retired from farming in 1985 and moved to Grundy Center to make their home in 1995.
He served as the Melrose Township Clerk for many years, and was a member of the Sheller Cemetery Association. Howard was a lifelong and faithful member of Ivester Church of the Brethren. During his years of service, he was a member of many committees and was a lifetime deacon. He and Katherine also loved to travel.
He is survived by his wife Katherine Sheller of Grundy Center, Iowa; two sons, Dean Sheller and his wife Linda of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; Donald Sheller of Toledo, Iowa; one daughter, Nancy Haren and her husband Terry of Grundy Center, Iowa; two grandsons; three granddaughters; two step-grandsons; six great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jean McDonough and her husband Homer of Grinnell, Iowa; and one brother, Gerald Sheller and his wife Alice of Corpus Christi, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
