Shirley A. Meyer was the daughter of Henry and Edith (Tjabben) Meyer. She was born February 22nd, 1937 in the home on her family farm 3 miles north of Austinville. The night of her birth there was a blinding snowstorm and the doctor had to be "fetched" from the road.

Shirley attended Crooked school in Washington township through the 7th grade and went on to graduate from Aplington High School in 1954. After graduation she worked in a bank in Aplington. During this time she met Herman Luhring and they were married on August 19th, 1955 at Pleasant Valley Reformed Church. In 1958 they moved to Stout and began a lifetime of farming. They lived there until 1984 when they moved to the Luhring family farm south of Parkersburg. From there until they retired to their home in Parkersburg in 1999.

Shirley devoted her life to loving her family and being a helpmate to Herman. She was especially devoted to her grandchildren. She loved to sew and do cross stitch and was widely known for her cooking-especially her desserts. Shirley was a vital part of the life of Pleasant Valley Reformed Church for over 50 years. A few of her formal functions included being a member of the Ladies Guild, Service Chairman and serving on the Pastoral search committee. Shirley also actively served the community of Parkersburg in many ways. She volunteered at the Historical Society, was a member of the Legion Auxiliary and helped clean the Vets Building. She also served beside her husband Herman in a project they initiated to beautify the city.

Shirley is survived by her husband: Herman, four daughters: Pam and husband Keith Van Hauen of Holland, Iowa, Roxanne and husband Charles Meyer of Burnsville, Minnesota, Lynnae and husband Rich Jess of Haslett, Michigan, and Joni and husband Lonnie Wright of Dike, Iowa; ten grandchildren: Amanda Akkerman of Dike, Iowa, Alaina (Darren) Flater of Dike, Iowa, Arielle Meyer of El Paso, Texas, Elisia Meyer of Burnsville, Minnesota Christopher Meyer of Burnsville, Minnesota, Joel Meyer of Burnsville, Minnesota, John Jess of Haslett, Michigan, Jennifer Jess of Haslett, Michigan, Kadi Wright of Dike, Iowa, Clayton Wright of Dike, Iowa; and a brother Ervin and wife Mildred Meyer of Aplington, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters: Eunice Abbas and Lela Orr.
