Gertrude "Gert" Hoodjer, 80, of Wellsburg, died March 4 in Waterloo from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. A prayer service was held March 9 at the United Reformed Church in Welslburg. Burial followed at Shiloh Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A memorial fund has been established.

Gertrude "Gert" Hoodjer was born October 19, 1923, in Wellsburg, the daughter of Weibe H. and Grace (Nederhoff) Meyer. Gertrude received her education in the Wellsburg School system and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1941. She was employed at various jobs including Boeke Drug and Eckhoff Cafe. On September 3, 1943, Gertrude was united in marriage to John R. Hoodjer at the Second Christian Reformed Church Parsonage in Wellsburg. They lived in California until John was sent overseas for military service. Gertrude returned to Wellsburg in 1944 to live with her parents until her husband John returned from military service. When John was discharged they farmed the Claus Neessen farm in rural Wellsburg until 1978. Gertrude was employed as a cook in the Wellsburg School for fifteen years, retiring in 1989. She was a faithful member of United Reformed Church of Wellsburg. She taught Sunday school for many years and was involved in the Helping Hands Society and was current president of the Willing Workers Society. Gertrude was a farm wife. She was also a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was blessed with her unconditional love. She enjoyed quilting, needlework, and crafts. She enjoyed attending activities that her family was involved in, and she also enjoyed her church activities.

She is survived by her husband John of Wellsburg; three sons, Wayne Hoodjer and his wife Carol of Holland; Gary Hoodjer of Wellsburg; Jay Hoodjer of Newton; two daughters Joyce Badrick and her husband Richard of Miles; Carol White of Marshalltown; one daughter-in-law Arlene Hoodjer of Wellsburg; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Meyer of Wellsburg; and LaVine Meyer of Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son Leslie Hoodjer; one son-in-law Sam White; one sister Clara DeNeui; two brothers Harm and Odie Meyer; one infant sister; her stepmother Nettie (Ackerman) Meyer; two half-sisters; three step-brothers; and two step-sisters.
