Joan C. Winger, 70, of Wellsburg, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Grundy County Memorial Hospital while under the care of Iowa Hospice. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at St. Peter United Church of Christ in Wellsburg with Pastor Jeff Maskevich officiating. Burial will follow immediately after the funeral service at St. Peter United Church of Christ Cemetery, Wellsburg. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home, Wellsburg.
Joan was born on February 6, 1940 in Beaman Township, Iowa to her parents Gratus and Dena Nederhoff. Joan lived in Wellsburg most of her life. She graduated from Wellsburg High School. Joan was united in marriage to John “Bill” Winger on August 14, 1964 in Eldora, Iowa. She and her husband lived briefly in Davenport and Waterloo, Iowa. However, they soon settled in Wellsburg to live and raise their family. Joan worked for Potgieter’s Elevator and Grain which then became Snittjer Grain Company. She worked there as a secretary for 44 years until her declining health necessitated her retirement.
Joan was a lifelong active member in St. Peter United Church of Christ. She created and printed bulletins for the church for many years. Her family remembers her true passion in life was spending as much time as she could with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed working and shopping.
Joan is survived by her children, David (Michelle) Winger of Lewisville, TX, Darrell (Kara) Winger of Bakersfield, CA, Sheila Cole of Grundy Center, IA and Greg (Sarah) Winger of Wellsburg, IA; her sisters Harriet (Harley) Off of Iowa Falls, IA and Donna (Kelly) Kramer of Aplington, IA; her brother Donald (Faye) Nederhoff of Ackley, IA and 8 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband “Bill”, and her sister Beverly Roberts.
