George Smit, Age 90, Dies

George Smit of 202 North Johnson, Parkersburg, IA, was born the son of Peter and Lea Smit on December 15, 1892, in Greatseel, Germany. He came to the United States with his family at the age of 9, and they settled in Hardin County, South of Ackley.

George was united in marriage to Alice Wiltfang on January 7, 1915. They lived near Buckgrove, in Stout, and came to Parkersburg about 60 years ago. George worked as a farmer, carpenter, and painter.

He died at 4:36 a.m., Saturday, December 25, 1982, in Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. George had reached the age of 90 years and 10 days.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 28, 1982, in the Schwartz-Engelkes Funeral Home in Parkersburg with Mr. Paul Elliott officiating. For special music a vocal solo was sung “How Great Thow Art.”

Casketbearers were Tim Lauzon, Ron Kolder, Albert Kolder, Albert Kuiper, Willard VanderHolt, and Clarence Smith. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Parkersburg, IA.

Schwartz-Engelkes Funeral Home in Parkersburg was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mr. Smit is survived by his wife, Alice Smit of Parkersburg; two daughters, Matilda, Mrs. John Goldhorn of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Josephine Nicklas of Ackley; a grand-daughter raised as a daughter, Judy, Mrs. Ted Lauzon of Waterloo; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lillian, Mrs. Norman Streit of Appleton, MN, Grace, Mrs. Fred Becker of Sioux Falls, SD, and Mrs. Pearl Greil of Lake Park, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, five sisters, two daughters and one grandson.
